By reciting the Pratah Smaran upon waking, with the intention of self-welfare, one cultivates faith in the Almighty God, devotion and love for the motherland and the nation, and sacred feelings of self-pride and self-respect awakened by the remembrance of glorious ancestors. As a result, a person moves forward on the path of duty with cheerfulness, vitality, determination, joy, and enthusiasm, inevitably achieving new successes. Throughout the day, the mind remains filled with happiness and high spirits.
कराग्रे वसते लक्ष्मीः करमध्ये सरस्वती।
कर मूले तु गोविन्दः प्रभाते करदर्शनम् ॥१॥
karāgre vasate lakṣmīḥ karamadhye sarasvatī।
kara mūle tu govindaḥ prabhāte karadarśanam ॥1॥
Lakshmi–Saraswati–Narayana Prayer: Upon waking up in the morning, rub both your palms together and then, while looking at your hands, recite this verse.
Meaning: At the tip of the hand (symbolizing effort) resides Goddess Lakshmi (wealth), in the middle resides Goddess Saraswati (knowledge), and at the base resides Govinda (the Supreme Lord Krishna). In the morning, one should look at their hands.
समुद्रवसने देविः पर्वतस्तनमण्डले।
विष्णुपत्निः नमस्तुभ्यं पादस्पर्शं क्षमस्व मे ॥२॥
samudravāsanē dēviḥ parvatastanamandale।
viṣṇupatniḥ namastubhyaṁ pādasparśaṁ kṣamasva mē ॥2॥
Earth Forgiveness Prayer: While placing your feet on the ground, recite this verse.
Meaning: O Goddess wearing garments like the ocean, who bears the mountains on Her bosom, wife of Lord Vishnu, I bow to you. Please forgive me as your feet touch me.
ब्रह्मा मुरारिस्त्रिपुरान्तकारी
भानुः शशीभूमिसुतो बुधश्च।
गुरुश्च शुक्रः शनिराहुकेतवः
कुर्वन्तु सर्वे मम सुप्रभातम् ॥३॥
brāhmā murāristtripurāntakārī
bhānuḥ śaśībhumisuto budhaśca।
gururścukraḥ śanirāhukētavaḥ
kurvantu sarvē mama suprabhātam ॥3॥
Prayer to the Trinity (Trimurti) and the Nine Planets:
Meaning: May all these gods bless my morning with auspiciousness: Brahma, Murari (Vishnu, the enemy of demon Mura), Tripurantaka (Mahesh, the destroyer of demon Tripurasura), the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu — the planets and divine beings.
सनत्कुमारः सनकः सनन्दनः
सनातनोऽप्यासुरिपिङ्गलौ च।
सप्त स्वराः सप्त रसातलानि
कुर्वन्तु सर्वे मम सुप्रभातम् ॥४॥
sanatkumāraḥ sanakaḥ sanandanaḥ
sanātanō'pyāsuripiṅgalau ca।
sapta svarāḥ sapta rasātalāni
kurvantu sarvē mama suprabhātam ॥4॥
Prayer to the Seven Sages (Saptarishi), Seven Netherworlds (Saptarasatala), and Seven Musical Notes (Saptaswara):
Meaning: May all these sages bless my morning: The four eternal sages — Sanatkumar, Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatana, the disciple Asuri and Pingala (teachers of meter and knowledge); may the seven notes (Shadja, Rishabha, Gandhara, Madhyama, Panchama, Dhaivata, Nishada), and the seven lower worlds (Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talatala, Mahatala, Rasatala, Patala) all bless my morning.
सप्तार्णवाः सप्त कुलाचलाश्च
सप्तर्षयो द्वीपवनानि सप्त।
भूरादिकृत्वा भुवनानि सप्त
कुर्वन्तु सर्वे मम सुप्रभातम् ॥५॥
saptārṇavāḥ sapta kulācalāśca
saptarṣayo dvīpavanāni sapta।
bhūrādikṛtvā bhuvanāni sapta
kurvantu sarvē mama suprabhātam ॥5॥
Prayer to the Seven Seas, Seven Mountains, Seven Sages, Seven Continents, Seven Forests, and Seven Realms:
Meaning: May the seven oceans (the seven water elements of the earth), the seven mountains (Mahendra, Malaya, Sahyadri, Shuktiman, Riksha, Vindhya, and Pariyatra), the seven sages (Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Gautama, Jamadagni, Vashistha, and Vishwamitra), the seven islands (Jambu, Plaksha, Shalmali, Kusha, Krauncha, Shaka, and Pushkara), the seven forests, and the seven worlds (Bhu, Bhuvah, Svah, Mahah, Janah, Tapah, and Satyam) — all bless my morning.or the virtuous person).
पृथ्वी सगन्धा सरसास्तथापः
स्पर्शी च वायुर्ज्वलनं च तेजः।
नभः सशब्दं महता सहैव
कुर्वन्तु सर्वे मम सुप्रभातम् ॥६॥
pṛthvī sagandhā sarasāstathāpaḥ
sparśī ca vāyurjvalanaṁ ca tejaḥ।
nabhaḥ saśabdaṁ mahatā sahaiva
kurvantu sarvē mama suprabhātam ॥6॥
Prayer to the Five Elements:
Meaning: May the Earth with its fragrance, the water with its taste, the air with its touch, the fire with its brilliance, and the sky with its great sound — all the five elements of wisdom — bless my morning.
प्रातः स्मरणमेतद्यो विदित्वादरतः पठेत्।
स सम्यक् धर्मनिष्ठः संस्मृताखण्ड भारतः ॥७॥
prātaḥ smaraṇametadyo viditvā arataḥ paṭhet।
sa samyak dharmaniṣṭhaḥ saṁsmṛtākhaṇḍa bhārataḥ ॥7॥
Meaning: Whoever understands and reverently recites this morning remembrance, being free from worldly attachments, remains truly devoted to righteousness and duty, and preserves the unbroken memory of Bharata (India or the virtuous person).
